The Cabinet of Ministers met yesterday (7) and discussed this proposal. The regular Cabinet meeting will not be conducted tomorrow because the President is planning to travel abroad on a private visit.
According to the proposed legislation, a regulatory commission is to be set up and will comprise key officials such as the Secretaries to the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, leading Muslim clerics etc.
After the bombings on April 21, there was discussion on the need to regulate Islamic centres of education. Under the new law that had been proposed, Madrasas and other institutions offering Islamic teaching will be monitored. (Kelum Bandara)
