The Public Administration Ministry is planning to submit a note to the Cabinet seeking clarification on action regarding the allocation of a government house by the former government for the lifetime use of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan, an official said yesterday.
The previous government had approved a Cabinet paper allowing Mr. Sampanthan to continue to use the house allocated to him as the then Opposition Leader even after he relinquished office. The former government had also spent Rs.35 million for its renovation.
The new government is having a fresh look at this Cabinet paper. The official who wished to remain anonymous said the Ministry would seek observations from the Cabinet Ministers on steps regarding the matter.
“This is the house meant for the opposition leader. But, the former government has assigned it to Mr. Sampanthan for use even after he is out of office. It had even spent money to renovate for Mr. Sampanthan’s use. The new government has to decide whether this house should be taken back or a separate house found for the opposition leader to be,” he said.
He said a Cabinet note would be submitted asking for observations in this regard. (Kelum Bandara)
