Clause on dual citizenship should be retained: Vasu

The clause relating to the dual citizenship which was introduced in the 19th Amendment should be retained in the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, Democratic Left Front (DLF) Leader Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said today.

He said he could not totally reject the 19A as there were several positive aspects in the 19A which could be retained.

“Some aspects such as provisions guaranteeing Right to Information, limiting the term of President to five years, limiting the number times one can contest for Presidency to two and preventing dual citizenship holders contesting at elections introduced in the 19A are the good aspects which should be retained,” he said.

Minister Nanayakkara said this while speaking to media in Colombo after meeting the Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka.

When asked about the plans of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to go to courts against 20A, he said it was a good move as seeking opinion of the court was also needed.
