Deeply saddened by the scenes at Jaffna University; UK Minister

UK Minister of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon said he saddened by the scenes at Jaffna University.

“Deeply saddened by the scenes at Jaffna University. It's important that people are able to remember all the tragic victims of Sri Lanka's conflict which help to heal the wounds of the past and support reconciliation,” Ahamed tweeted.

The decision to remove the war monument at the Jaffna University was taken by Vice Chancellor of Jaffna University Professor Srisatkunarajah, as it was seen as an obstruction to unity and reconciliation, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said.

Meanwhile, Jaffna University V-C S Srisatkunarajah told The Sunday Express that he ordered the removal of the structure as it was illegal. “There was already a war memorial at the campus. But this new one was erected recently during the 10th anniversary of ending the Sri Lankan war… (it was) installed without permission from authorities,” he said.

Srisatkunarajah said there were orders from the government to remove all such unauthorised structures.
