The Government’s aim is to bring the Colombo Port City to the list of ten such economic zones in the world, Minister Namal Rajapaksa said today.
He told Parliament that there were 5,000 such economic zones in the world where only 100 of them have been successful.
“Our aim is to bring Colombo Port City to the list of ten economic zones of this nature,” he said.
Speaking during the debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill, he said the Port City economic zone would be operated under the legal framework of Sri Lanka where laws pertaining labour would apply within the zone.
He said that the economic zone would become a trade hub which would generate employment opportunities for the educated Sri Lankan youth and expose them to the modern transaction systems used in the world.
“We will introduce modern digital currencies such as Crypto and Bitcoin in the Port City which will expose our generation of youth to the modern world," he said.
The Minister also said the President’s Digitalisation programme would also be compatible with the activities of the Port City. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
