Moves to get President’s term extended unethical: SLPP

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today said the decision taken by President Maithripala Sirisena to seek Court opinion to ‘get his term extended’ was unethical since he pledged not to contest for a second term.

Addressing a news briefing held at the SLPP office in Battaramulla, MP Ramesh Pathirana said there was a move to seek court opinion next week, on the commencement date of the President's tenure.

“This move is to clarify whether the President’s term commenced on January 9, 2015, when the President was sworn in his office or on May 19, 2015, when the 19th Amendment was passed in parliament. The President earlier too sought court opinion on his tenure. He is on a mission to get his tenure extended," Dr. Pathirana said.

Meanwhile, MP Piyal Nishantha said it was unfortunate that the President was seeking an extension of the tenure by even one day since he pledged not to contest for a second term.

He said government leaders were attempting to go for a general election first because of the presidential candidate issue within the United National Party and so that President Sirisena could continue for a longer term in the presidency. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
