Amid speculation that President Maithripala Sirisena is attempting to strike a deal with a section of the United National Party (UNP) to secure his presidential candidacy, a senior minister said yesterday that it was the Working Committee which would decide on the candidate.
Senior UNPer and Public Enterprise Development Minister Lakshman Kiriella said his party was not the personal property of anyone.
The minister who is also the Leader of House said this when asked to comment on speculation that the President was planning to bring about a regime change once again with the backing of a group of UNPers.
Earlier, several UNP leaders spelled out that the party should nominate one of its members as the candidate instead of supporting a common candidate. (Kelum Bandara)
