Railway work-to-rule campaign from tonight

The Locomotive Engine Operators' Union (LEOU) has decided to launch a work-to-rule campaign from tonight over allegations that they are not adhering to speed limits set out by the railway department.

Union Secretary Indika Dodangoda told the media that the sudden decision was taken following a meeting held with the Railway General Manager (GMR).

He said the GMR discussed the matter with locomotive operators, Railway guards and several officials this morning.

"The standard of existing infrastructure in the railway department is not up to expected levels, but senior railway officers are taking steps to recover losses arising from rail accidents from our staff members. We have submitted our objections but we are yet to receive a favourable response," Mr. Dodangoda said.

According to the prevailing railway facilities, no train can be operated and end the journey on time, he said.

Therefore, the LEOU had decided to launch the work-to-rule campaign and operate trains according to the given time tables, Mr. Dodangoda said.

"During the work-to-rule campaign, there could be delays. We will not operate trains with technical defects but only those with the official technical certificate," he said adding that they would take strict action if moves are taken to sabotage their action.
