Rescued leopard in Maskeliya dies

The leopard which was rescued after being trapped in a tree in Maskeliya died yesterday due to severe damages caused to its internal organs, Wildlife Department Director-General Chandana Sooriyabandara said.

The leopard was trapped in a tree on a land owned by the Gartmore Estate in Maskeliya near the Samanala Forest Reserve and was rescued by the Wildlife officers.

The animal was tranquilized after the rescue operation which lasted for nearly nine hours last afternoon, and taken to the Minipe Veterinary Hospital for further treatment.

However, it succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the hospital. The Director said the leopard had been in the tree for two days.

The leopard was tranquilized after the rescue operation. Wasn't it after it was tranquilized that the leopard was rescued,? The fall from the pole after the tranquilized gun was fired may have caused injury to its internal organs. Watching the operation shown on TV the Vet did his best in the circumstances.

Can never get positive results when our people are always cheap and sloppy, (first of all we need the right gear, then proper education to handle an animal properly/gently) could have prevented many incidents like this only if we were following the british standards.

These people doesn't know even tie the nod after it got fainted. If u see the video properly, u could identify leapoed was crashed into the rocks. They should understand the loapard is not dead and only fainted and even safe machanism would been carried out than this.

The operation looks very unprofessional. Too many by standers, multiple people shouting different instructions and taking down that beautiful animal lassoed by it's hind quarter looks terrible - may have damaged its spine or other internal organ. The act had good intentions, but carried out in an unprofessional manner. Sad.
