SIU probes to ascertain Wellampitiya police erred

Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Police launched a probe to determine whether that the nine individuals who were workers of the copper factory at Wellampitiya were released on bail due to an error of Wellampitiya Police officers, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

Nine employees attached to the copper factory in Wellampitiya, which was owned by Mohamed Ibrahim Inshaq Ahamed, the suicide bomber at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, were arrested in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks on April 21.

They were remanded till May 6 and when the suspects were produced in the court on May 6, they were granted bail. It was alleged that those workers were released because the Wellampitiya Police had failed to mention the offences the suspects were alleged to have committed.

The nine suspects were released on two sureties of Rs.500,000 each owing to insufficient evidence against the suspects.

SP Gunasekera said yesterday that maximum action would be taken against police officers, if the investigation carried out by the SIU had proven that there were errors committed by the Wellampitiya Police officers when granting bail to the suspects.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
