Twitter restores Chinese Embassy’s account

The Twitter handle of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka which was suspended on April 13, has been restored by the social media platform today. The official account of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka (@ChinaEmbSL) said Twitter 'apologized for the mistake and reopened' the account. Meanwhile, an Embassy spokesperson said the account was suspended without informing any specific reason. "The Embassy made solemn representation to Twitter twice, requesting the latter to clarify and correct their decision, to avoid any misunderstanding and random association in the public. In the early morning of April 14, Twitter officially replied the Embassy for a “systematic mistake”, apologised and lift the suspension of the Embassy’s account. The Embassy feels regretful to this “systematic mistake”, and would like to reiterate that the “Freedom of Speech” must be honored, while not be misused to spread groundless, racial or hatred speech, nor be treated with “Double Standards”," the Spokesperson said.

What a joke.. Freedom of speech and China in the same sentence! We in Sri Lanka know what freedom of speech is and are proud of it and will protect and preserve it. In China even doctors are arrested and beaten up if they warn each other privately that a new respiratory disease is spreading.

Maybe the Embassy would like send the same message to Beijing! Championing "Freedom of Speech" from a country that denies its own citizens the same right is nothing short of total hypocrisy

@Suddha well, double standards indeed. You may feign ignorance or may not have heard of the spying that has been going on by the American and European Governments on their own citizens! One major reason for resistance to 5G, infact is because the US Government will not be in a position to spy on its own citizens if 5G is rolled out by an organisation besides its own, that is able to infiltrate the systems of people, in the guise of fighting terrorism but effectively infringing on the rights of its own citizens. Best wipe those rose - tinted glasses clean, prior to accusing another state of purported violations.

Shame, they should have kept the ban. The Chinese Communist Party deny their own citizens any form of freedom of speech but they think they deserve it from the rest of the world.. Hypocrisy!
