The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed Eastern expressway project from Mattala airport to Pottuwil across Wellawaya and Siyambalanduwa, according to the Cabinet office.

Minister of Roads and Highways, Johnston Fernando on Wednesday sought Cabinet approval to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed expressway and the Cabinet of Ministers granted the approval for it.

The Cabinet also approved a proposal to seek funding for the project via the Department of External Resources of the Treasury.

Further, the Cabinet of Ministers also re-approved the awarding of contract of phase one of Ruwanpura expressway to China National Technical Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC) initiated by the previous regime.

CNTIC was originally awarded the construction of 26.30 km stretch from Kahatuduwa to Ingiriya in late 2017.

However, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to call bids on competitive basis for the construction of phase II of the same project,

which was earlier awarded to China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation (CATIC-ENG).

The phase two includes 21km stretch from Ingiriya to Kahangama.
