A polls observer today asked the Elections Commissioner in writing to take steps to ensure the voting rights of displaced people at the election to Puthukuduiruppu and Maritime Pattu Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Mullaitivu District.

Executive Director of the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Rohana Hettiarachchi said in writing that a considerable number of registered voters of the these  local government areas still remain displaced.

“A considerable number of people are living at the Manik Farm Welfare camps in Vavuniya. Therefore we request you to take steps to identify these voters and secure their right to vote,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.

The elections will be conducted in these areas on March 24, 2012. Also, PAFFEL requested the Commissioner to establish two coordinating offices in the areas and to deploy a police officer in the run up to the election. (Kelum Bandara)
