Five starved dogs, kill and eat one of them

Five dogs found in a house in Kaldemulla at Moratuwa, who had been left to starve for more than a week four dogs had resorted to killing and eating the fifth.  

The police raided the house on information from the Society to Protect the Rights of Animals and the Environment, to find three dogs, two pregnant bitches of the breed of American Blue Pit Bull and the partly eaten carcass of another.   


Police said the owner had been away from home for more than a week regardless of the suffering of the poor animals and that they had fed on the flesh of one.   


The suspect businessman was produced before Moratuwa Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya on the charge of cruelty to animals and released on personal bail in Rs.100,000 each with two sureties and the dogs released to him on a bond of Rs.1.5 million. The Magistrate ordered the Police to find the cause of death of the dog and to see that the owner properly cared for the five dogs and provided them food.   


A police team under HQI Mount Lavinia Police Dileep C. Perera had carried out the raid on the instructions of SSP Kamal Pushpakumara.
