Laxapana and Wimalasurendra hydropower reservoirs had been spilling over from last morning due to the heavy rain experienced in the western slopes of the central hills for the last two days.
Assistant Director of Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Centre Ranjith Alahakoon said one of the spill gates in the Laxapana reservoir was opened to release excess water. He said other spill gates would be opened if the inclement weather prevailed.
The official said the Kelani river could swell due to the release of excess water in the Laxapana reservoir creating a possible flood threat in the low-lying areas of the river.
