President Maithripala Sirisena said today he was facing death threats because of his campaign against drug trafficking and that he had been informed about these threats by intelligence officers.
He said this at a function held in Polonnaruwa to distribute deeds for Mahaweli lands.
The President said there was a conspiracy to destroy him and weaken him as he was leading the campaign against drug smuggling.
“Drug dealers are behind these moves and they are spending a lot of money on this. Social media are campaigning in favour of drug dealers and drug addicts,” he said and added that a number of people was going to court to weaken the anti-drug campaign,” he said and added that the government, the opposition and the NGOs had started to target him.
“I am not here to safeguard anyone. I will take action against anyone who resorts to corruption, fraud and misuse of public funds," the President said.
Referring to the Presidential Commission appointed to probe the Easter Sunday attack, he said investigations had been launched on the report issued by the Commission.
“Seven cases had been filed on this incident in the Supreme Court. Even I had been made a respondent, thanks to the freedom and democracy created in the country. I am ready to adhere to any verdict given by the SC,” he said. (K.G. Karunaratne)
