Vehicles no longer permitted to park on pavements

A special operation will be launched from tomorrow (17) to identify vehicles for illegal parking as well as for parking on pavements, DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He said police will tow away such vehicles including motorcycles that are parked on pavements or blocking roads.

DIG Rohana said the motorist will have to pay towing charges.

“Legal action will be taken on incidents of illegal parking in which a person could be fined Rs. 50,000 or imprisoned after being produced in courts,” he said.

He said unnecessary traffic and accidents were reported mostly due to unauthorized parking and added this practice also caused inconvenience to the public. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

How many by-roads/lanes in Colombo have pavements nowadays ? In Wellawatte, not a single by lane has a pavement , whereas 20-25 years ago, almost all by roads/lanes had a pavement.

It is all well and good. The reason why they park on pavements is because there are NO parking provided. Either there should be plenty of parking spaces or reduce the number of vehicles. You cannot just fine without providing facilities.

The police have woken up from a deep sleep! This rule should have been enforced decades ago. It won't be enforced now either, just talk, like all the other threats. This will be another farce like curfew violators. If you're serious, start with the 3wheelers using up every inch of parking space in every town. They take up all the available parking.

Let's see how long this will last? I can assume it is like Gota's drain and beach cleaning program that only lasted a few weeks. What about the motorbikes and three wheeler's driving on the the pavements, where we have to step a side and give them right of way ?

@ DA. You are wrong. It is not the job of the authorieties to provide parking options. No vehicle should be registered in Colombo if the owner cannot prove that he has his own parking space, either on his property or on a rented one. Companies and other establishments must have enough parking spaces for their customers and employees.

In developed countries firstly they provide the infrastructure which comes with parking and all proper signs etc. This is how intelligent and democratic leaders work. Then the fines are imposed so as to create discipline etc. Now we wonder why Lanka is still developing!

Why don't the police start with Serandib Road in Kollupitiya next to Liberty cinema. All the motor bike are parked on the pavement.
