About 1800 doughnuts are sold every 30 minutes at a leading public school in Colombo. "We have decided to activate the School Canteen Act to curb these kinds of unhealthy activities", the Ministry of Health said.
The Health Ministry has confirmed that the three most popular public schools in the country have canteens that sell an array of unhealthy foods such as Thai, Indian and Chinese food to students.
“Some restaurants are specialized for Chinese, Italian or Indian food, but these canteens have all these kinds. This is unhealthy as it leads to Obesity and Diabetes,” Deputy Minister of Health Ministry, Mahinda Amaraweera said.
As a result, the Ministry has decided to activate the School Canteen Act, which states that school canteens should provide local, healthy foods and fresh fruit juices.
The act also mentions that artificial beverages and foods should not be made available to students. “A disciplinary action will be taken against a principal of any school that has failed to adhere to this act and the canteen will be also be closed down,” Mr. Amaraweera said. (MB)

This type of food is not good for health. That's why the government is trying to avoid it.

Furthermore, it is not good for the members of the Parliament, they should at all times avoid eating these PAAN PITI food items.

First provide clean drinking water at schools before speaking about fresh fruit juices, which only a few students can afford.

Parlimentarians are adults. If they want to control their diets they can do so. If they dont have self control, toobadfor them. But health conscious parents who feed their kids healthy stuff simply are undermined by school canteens - and you cant blame kids for having a sweet tooth. So this is a great measure and very forward looking, Thanks!
Make sure all the sugary drinks-pepsi, coca cola and other calorie rich, nutrition poor stuff are all removed.

So right Sha!! Banning is such a cop-out in this case kids need to be educated on and encouraged to develop healthy eating habits. The so called leaders and parents need to lead the way - words need to be seen as credible. AND by the way, authentic chinese food is NOT unhealthy, the method of cooking involved ensures that the nutriants of all the food cooked is preserved and transgfered to our bodies.

Itz a good idea we should ban those foods otherwise we'll have sick nation in the future. What happens when younger generation addicted to those unhealthy foods. Pls don't see this as a simple thing. It a very serious case. See presently half of the nation is suffering from some kind of sickness. Mouestly d to unhealthy foods. I guess multinational companies are behind the scene. More sick people will make more profit to them.
