Video: Election mechanism manipulated to help Govt.; SF

Democratic Party leader Sarath Fonseka said today that the Elections Commissioner was changing the election mechanism in a tactful manner to suit the needs of the government and was making various statements with regard to the elections to the Uva Provincial Council.

“The Elections Commissioner is making various statements about the Uva Provincial Council election. He is trying to change the election mechanism to cater to the needs of the government. The move of the Elections Commissioner to alter the Provincial Council seats in the Uva province is not meant for the benefit of the people but only for the benefit of the ruling party,” Mr. Fonseka said.

Mr. Fonseka asked as to how the Elections Commissioner was carrying out a momentous task in the country even without having the common sense to understand that the Badulla district has more registered voters than the Moneragala District despite the latter being lager in extent.

“Even though the Moneragala district is lager in extent, it has only about 332,000 registered voters which is only half of the registered voters in the Badulla district,” he said.

Mr. Fonseka charged that the government was acting to materialise its political gains leaving behind the needs of the people, even though it claimed to ensure democracy in the country.

“The president is boasting about ensuring democracy in the country. But he is acting to gain political gains rather than acting for the benefit of the people. The district secretary of the Moneragala district has been transferred in the wake of the elections to appoint its goons so that it can manipulate the election result in the Uva province,” he said.

When asked whether the Democratic Party was going to take legal action against the Elections Commissioner’s move to alter the Provincial Council seats in the Uva province, Mr. Fonseka said it would help the main opposition United National Party if it was going to take legal action in this regard in a proper way.
