By imprisoning former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, the government has given credence to the international allegation that the rule of law is not upheld in Sri Lanka, the UNP says.
Addressing a press conference, UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said that the former Army Commander is now a political prisoner among 8000 such persons put behind bars without any charge being served on them.
“The European Union and the UN always pinpoint Sri Lanka for not upholding the rule of law. Political opponents are mercilessly hounded. The former Army Commander was dubbed as the world’s best by this government after he finished the war. Now, he is a traitor in jail. He has to undergo this political victimization because he fell out with the government and contested the presidency,” Mr. Kiriella said. (KB)
