The elephant that roamed around the Kabilitta Devalaya in Kataragama had been ill for several days, Wildlife State Minister Wimalaweera Dissanayake said.
He stated that the elephant had been suffering from painful wounds on his body over the last five days as a result of being harmed by people in the area.
The Wildlife Director General and Veterinary doctors were informed, but people claimed that no action had been taken to provide medicine for the elephant.
Due to the severity of the wounds, the Veterinary doctors were unable to make the elephant lie down. Therefore, the doctors were treating it from a distance.
But people in the area alleged the wildlife department was not concerned about the elephant, the State Minister said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
