Fourteen Sri Lankan fugitives were under red notice as being wanted by Interpol either for the prosecution or to serve a sentence, according to Interpol statistics posted on its website. They were among 6,872 red notices on fugitives issued by them.
According to Interpol sources, four Sri Lankans, 34-year-old De Soyza Jagamuni Sujeewa alias Kosgoda Sujee, Antony Emil Luxmi Kanthan (42), Munisamy Tharmaseelan (46) and Viknarasa Selvanthan (31) are wanted by Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities.
The red notices were issued on Kosgoda Sujee over a murder case and on Emil Kanthan over criminal misappropriation. Tharmaseelan is wanted over possession of two hand grenades and 200 rounds of live ammunition while Selvanthan was charged over robbery and murder.
Meanwhile, ten more Sri Lankans have been issued red notices upon requests made by foreign countries over crimes they had committed in their territories.
Seven Sri Lankan nationals facing ten red notices are also wanted by India, while three fugitives, born in Sri Lanka, are also wanted by Romania, Canada and Cyprus.
Accordingly, 48-year-old Tharmalingam Shanmugam Kumaran, born in Kankesanthurai, Jaffna, is wanted over criminal conspiracy, violation of the Terrorist Act and the Indian Explosives Act while M.K.M. Ramzi Mohammed, a resident of Colombo, is wanted for criminal conspiracy.
Meanwhile, 53-year-old Balamurali Krishna, who was born in Jaffna, is wanted on charges of possession of heroin and drug trafficking, while a 57-year-old suspect named Nihal is wanted over the possession of heroin.
Ramasamy Alageshan Madhawan is wanted over criminal conspiracy, 56-year-old Mohamed Powmi of Elabodagama is wanted over a counterfeit currency scam and 53-year-old Rajan Maran Udayakumar, who was born in Colombo, is wanted by India over cheating and criminal conspiracy.
In addition, 48-year-old Kumarasamy Navaneethan, who was born in Vavuniya is wanted by Romania for murder, while 37-year-old Manickavasagar Vijayarajah, born in Jaffna, is wanted in Canada for first-degree murder.
An Interpol red notice has also been issued for 40-year-old Ranasinghe Arachchige Sanjeewa Prasanna Ranasinghe over theft in Cyprus.
A red notice is a request to law enforcement authorities worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action, Interpol sources explained.
Meanwhile, the Interpol has also issued yellow notices to help locate missing persons, often minors, or to help identify persons who are unable to identify themselves.
Accordingly, two yellow notices have been issued on two Sri Lankans, a child and a woman. A yellow notice was issued on 16-year-old Gayindu Kithmuka Madurapperuma, born in Colombo, who disappeared in Colombo in 2008, when he was a 5-year-old.
The other yellow notice was issued on 34-year-old Ganesamoorthy Kajanthiny, who was born in Jaffna and had disappeared in 2009 when she was a 24-year-old. (Darshana Sanjeewa)
