18 arrested for assault on police

Eighteen persons were arrested for allegedly attempting to assault two policemen who were on duty in Pavakkudi, Vavunathivu this evening, the police said.

The suspects had attempted to trouble the two policemen who were on duty at the Pavakkudi Samurdhi Bank.

A patrol team from the elite Special Task Force (STF) had tried to disperse a crowd of around 150 to 200 civilians who gathered around the bank. They are to be produced in courts tomorrow and the Vavunathivu police are conducting further investigations. (SD)
