Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, stated that this decision stems from the candidates' failure to secure at least 12.5% of the vote in the recently concluded presidential election.
According to election law, candidates who do not meet this minimum vote requirement are required to forfeit their deposits.
Only three candidates out of 38, namely Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Sajith Premadasa, were able to secure more than the required percentage. Anura Dissanayake obtained 42.3%, while Premadasa garnered 32.8%, and Wickremesinghe received 17.3%.
