55,871 eligible postal voters

A total of 55,871voters are eligible to vote by post tomorrow for the local government polls being held on July 23rd, to elect members to 65 local government bodies, deputy elections commissioner W.P.Sumanasiri said.

Mr. Sumanasiri said the Elections Secretariat has made arrangements for postal voting at almost all government offices and average 10 – 12 voters are expected at each polling stations adding that ballot papers have already been delivered to Presiding Officers.

The elections for 65 local government bodies had to be postponed following their nominations were rejected by election officers when the nominations were accepted on January 27 for the local government election held on March 17.

The Court of Appeal directed the Elections Commissioner to hold elections to 65 local government bodies after hearing the petitions were filed by political parties against the rejection. (SAJ)
