It was revealed that a total of 82,194 vehicles have been assigned to the government institutions, including Ministries, State Enterprises, Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions.
This was disclosed following a report submitted including the details of the vehicles belonging to government establishments to the attention of the Cabinet Ministers by the Prime Minister, in the capacity of the Economic Policies and Plan Implementation Minister.
According to the report, there are 82,194 vehicles under government institutions, Ministries, State Enterprises, Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions. 76,661 vehicles are in running condition while 5,533 vehicles are unroadworthy.
Out of the vehicles under running condition, 33,931 are under the ownership of government institutions, including the Ministries. 26,395 vehicles under State Enterprises and 16,335 under the Provincial Councils and Local Government Institutions.
Approximately 8,500 senior officials in state institutions have been granted permission to use their private vehicles for official transport purposes, with payment of monthly allowances.
Considering the above information furnished by the Economic Policies and Plan Implementation Minister, the Cabinet has decided to utilise the vehicles which could be repaired and to discard the irreparable ones subject to a formal methodology with immediate effect. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
