In a letter dated June 27, the Attorney General (AG) has instructed the Acting IGP to take necessary steps under the criminal procedure code by naming former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando as suspects and to produce them in the relevant Magistrate's Court after recording statements over the alleged criminal negligence and failure to prevent or minimise the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

However, the Daily Mirror learns that the Acting IGP has so far not acted according to the AG's instructions.

Consequently, the AG today sent another letter to the Acting IGP seeking an explanation as to why he did not comply with the AG's instructions thus far by naming the former IGP and the Defence Secretary as suspects.

According to Coordinating Officer to the AG, SC Nishara Jayaratne, the second letter sent by the AG last morning sought an explanation within the course of the day itself. However, the Acting IGP had not replied to the AG for non-compliance of his part to name the aforesaid individuals as suspects.

The AG has considered in his letters that there were serious criminal negligence and carelessness by the former IGP and the Defence Secretary over the incident under the Sections 296, 298, 327, 328, 329 and 410 of the penal code. (Shehan Chamika Silva)
