JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has sent a letter of demand claiming Rs.10 billion each as damages from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam and Parliamentarian Tissa Kuttiarachchi for allegedly making a defamatory statement regarding him during a public meeting held on August 19 in Colombo.
SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam and MP Tissa Kuttiarachchi had allegedly made remarks regarding allegations against National People's Power (NPP) over its alleged investments in the island country of Malta.
This letter of demand has been sent through Attorney-at-law Sunil Watagala urging both Kariyawasam and Kuttiarachchi to pay a sum of Rs.20 billion as damages within 14 days. It has warned that legal action will be instituted against the duo at a civil court if the money is not paid within two weeks.
Attorney-at-law Watagala said he was instructed by his client that statements made by the two Parliamentarians to the public were unfounded, absolutely false, baseless, malicious and in itself defamatory. It further stated that statements made by two Parliamentarians are defamatory and had been made with the intention of tarnishing the JVP leader’s reputation and to commit an injury (animus injuriandi) to bring him into ridicule.
