ASP transferred over Kurunegala Mayor’s birthday celebration; Two probes underway

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has been transferred for allowing to organise Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa's birthday celebration at the Kurunegala Police premises, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickremeratne ordered to initiate an inquiry on the birthday party held along with a Pirith chanting ceremony violating COVID-19 prevention regulations.

The probe is headed by Senior DIG Nandana Munasinghe.

A seven-day pirith chanting ceremony has also been organized by the Kurunegala Police in view of the prevailing pandemic in the country.

It was reported that the Mayor attended the religious observance yesterday (30), where his birthday was also celebrated.

The ASP attached to the Police Station is reported to have arranged the cutting of cake to celebrate the Mayor’s birthday.

Meanwhile, a team of Special Investigation Unit has also been deployed to conduct an investigation into the incident.

The party was organized at a time when all public gatherings and parties have been suspended due to the prevailing COVID outbreak in the county. (Pushpakumara Jayaratne)
