Colombo, November 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department will be able to provide more accurate weather forecasts from 2026, following the installation of two Doppler radar systems by the end of this year.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Director of Forecasting and Early Warning, M.M.P. Mendis, stated that the two Doppler radar systems will be provided to Sri Lanka as part of a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Civil construction work to install these radar systems is set to begin soon in Puttalam and Pottuvil.
The department has informed the President of the need for at least two Doppler radar systems; however, it currently lacks sufficient funds for the installation in Pottuvil, the Deputy Director said.
"Doppler radars have the capability to detect not only the intensity of precipitation but also the motion of rain droplets. This will enable more accurate monitoring of flash flood conditions. At present, the department can only measure rainfall after it has occurred, but with Doppler radars, it will be possible to estimate the water content in clouds on the same day," he said.
"The Doppler radar technology works by emitting electromagnetic pulses that reflect off raindrops, allowing meteorologists to analyze the data and pinpoint areas with severe weather conditions. This makes Doppler radar an invaluable tool in the effort to protect lives and property," he said.
The data received from the Doppler radar will enable more accurate forecasting of flash floods, the Deputy Director said.
