Airman nabbed over bank robbery in Ambalangoda

An Air Force personnel has been arrested for robbing Rs. 136,000 in cash from a rural bank at Usmudulawa in Ambalangoda by threatening the Bank's manageress yesterday, police said.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect came in a motorbike wearing a fulface helmet had robbed the bank by threatening to explode a hand grenade before fleeing.

However, the Ambalangoda police had began the hunt to net the suspect following an alert and nabbed the thief minutes after the robbery.

The suspect, a 44-year-old resident of Ambalangoda and an airman attached to the Sri Lanka Air Force Base, Trincomalee.

Police recovered a foreign-made hand grenade, localy made explosive and a toy pistol from the suspect along with the stolen money.
