If the country continues to see higher number of COVID-19 Omicrone variant positive cases, and if the current situation prevails further in the next couple of weeks, there would be a possibility that the country could face another critical scenario, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) General Committee Member Dr. Prasad Kolambage said.

He said there is a higher number of positive cases with the COVID-19 Omicrone variant, with reports coming from many parts of the country.

"According to the PCR tests conducted, there were 1,300 positive cases across the country," he said.

Therefore, Dr. Kolambage asked the people to strictly follow the health guidelines to curb the spread. Although the complications relating to the current variant are fewer, more of its kind could emerge with different and possibly more severe complications in the future.

The GMOA believes that if actions are not taken to control the present situation, the country would face further disaster in terms of the virus spread.

Dr. Kolambage urged the responsible health authorities to take action to remove false allegations and to promote information that is scientifically proven about the virus. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
