An elephant had died after being hit by the Menagaya night mail train, which was travelling from Batticaloa to Colombo Fort last night.
The Railways Department said this incident took place between Welikanda and Poonani railway stations at around 10 p.m.
They said another elephant died three days before after being hit by the Pulatisi train at around 9.15 p.m. at a place closer to the current incident. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarwickrama)
