Azharuddin has been accused of misappropriating funds during his time as president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).
Mohammad Azharuddin jolted with corruption cases
Four corruption cases have been registered against legendary Indian batsman Mohammad Azharuddin. The administrator-cum-politician, who is also a Congress leader in Telangana, is also due to file his nominations for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
The Rachakonda Police have registered four cases against active and previous office bearers of the HCA, including its former president. Azharuddin has already sought bail from the Malkajgiri Court for all four cases.
The cricketer himself has dismissed the charges placed against him, calling them as a mere attempt to tarnish his reputation ahead of the elections. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the 60-year-old wrote:
“I have seen news reports that have reported that FIR's have been registered against me on complaints by CEO, HCA. I want to state that these are all false & motivated allegations & I am in no way connected with the allegations. I will reply to the motivated allegations against me at an appropriate time. This is just a stunt pulled by my rivals to ruin my reputation.”
It is worth nothing that Mohammad Azharuddin was also banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during his playing days owing to his alleged involvement in the 2000 match-fixing scandal. Upon getting his ban lifted by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2015, the former cricketer took up the administrator role in the HCA.
