Colombo, August 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Brampton Municipal authorities in Canada have disregarded the Sri Lankan government’s protest over the construction of what is called ‘Tamil genocide memorial’ as its Mayor Patrick Brown requested Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister M. Joly to take a hard line position against Sri Lanka, according to the letter which Daily Mirror is now in possession.

Earlier, Sri Lankan Consul General Thushara Rodrigo wrote to the Mayor expressing Sri Lanka’s opposition to the construction of this memorial. Besides, Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry also summoned Canadian High Commissioner Eric Walsh and registered Sri Lanka’s protest.

However, the Brampton Mayor said in writing to the Canadian Minister that his office would not be intimidated by what he called ‘interference in local affairs by the genocidal Sri Lankan government’.

“In Sri Lanka, the government can try to stop the Tamil community from remembering their loved ones and heroes, but they cannot do it in Canada. It is an act of foreign interference that they attempt to obstruct memorial and remembrance events in Canada,” he wrote.
