Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said that Buddhism is a great blessing upon Sri Lanka, adding that political leaders should always follow this religious doctrine when taking decisions on behalf of the country.
The Cardinal expressed these views addressing a religious event at a Buddhist temple in Payagala.
“I believe Buddhism is a great blessing upon Sri Lanka. The Stupas and Viharas we see today signify the love, kindness and the affinity the ancient kings showed towards Buddhism. I see this country as a strong nation rooted in Sinhala Buddhist traditions. Therefore nobody can say that this is not a Buddhist country. Those who do are foolish. Our political leaders should understand this. The greatest gift bestowed upon this country is this religion, Buddhism. Therefore safeguarding this religion is our collective duty,” he said.
“We must attempt to make our lives meaningful by following the advise and philosophy of the Sangha. Every decision that we take as leaders of this country should be in accordance with this religious thought. It is not advisable to go against this religion when taking decisions,” the Cardinal added.
