Former president Maithripala Sirisena said investigations on the Central Bank bond scam should proceed interrupted.
He told Daily Mirror at a recent interview that he did his job when he was in office despite then prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe standing in his way.
“Mr. Wickremesinghe placed hurdles against the investigations. Actually, he started inquiries against the police sleuths who conducted investigations into the bond scam. Those police officers were taken to task for examining the telephone details of some MPs. However, I proceeded with investigations despite obstacles. I did documentation work to get the then CB governor Arjuna Mahendran extradited from Singapore,” Mr. Sirisena said.
Responding to a query about securing Cabinet approval to retain his official residence during retirement, he said the five past presidents were entitled to such housing benefits after relinquishing office.
Mr. Sirisena said all those former presidents or their widows were using such benefits up to date and the Presidents Entitlement Act No 6 of 1984 defines privileges and benefits for serving and past presidents. (Kelum Bandara)
