Finance Minister Karunanayake, who is on an official visit to China, is due to return on Sunday, July 3.
Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran's tenure ended on Thursday June 30.
Several names including those of Advisor to the Prime Minister, Charitha Ratwatte, Senior Deputy Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, Central Bank's former Deputy Governor W.A. Wijewardene and Dinesh Weerakody are being mentioned as possible replacements for Mr.Mahendran.
Meanwhile, the government denied reports that financial markets had declined as a result of the Central Bank controversy. (Yohan Perera)
