A tense situation arose when participants asked former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at a meeting to declare her stance on the Aruwakkalu Garbage Recycling Plant.

The people asked her about her stance on Saturday (08) in Wanathawilluwa, Puttalam when she was addressing a meeting in support of presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa.

Former President and the present SLFP Patron Ms Chandrika Kumaratunga and MP Kumara Welgama participated with a few other SLFP representatives at the meeting with the Puttalam District UNP Parliamentarian Hector Appuhami and several other UNP politicians.

When the former President was leaving the stage people questioned her about the garbage dump in Aruwakkalu and said they would have to leave their villages in a few years due to it and they had already experienced explosions.

She promised to solve the problem after the presidential election and left the place under the protection of her security officers

There was a clash between the protesters and CBK’s supporters.

However, the police were able to contain the situation. (Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe)
