The attorney, representing the company owner accused of bringing substandard vaccines into Sri Lanka, revealed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had apprehended and brought before the court a ‘small fish’ linked to the case and there are still ‘bigger fish’ involved in this matter out there.

The owner of the company Aruna Deepthi accused of importing substandard vials of immunoglobulin has been arrested by the CID and was produced before the Court yesterday.

The attorney Ms. Chandani Dayaratne, who said that her client was an innocent victim of this incident, said that all those who approved the importation of these vaccines under emergency purchases are responsible for this crime. “There is more to this than what is shown in the media and that none of the high-ranking people involved in this crime have been exposed so far,” she told the Court.

While rejecting bail for the suspect, the Magistrate said that the suspect can make a confession if he wants to reveal this crime and the people connected to it. (Manopriya Gunasekera)
