Sri Lanka could face the risk of reporting over one million COVID-19 cases within next 100 days, Health Ministry Spokesman Dr Hemantha Herath said.

"Our general calculations suggest that if COVID-19 virus is spread to another person within 5-6 days, the caseload will double every five days,

Accordingly, if the caseload doubles 20 times within 100 days, the caseload might surpass the one million mark," he added.

"However, we are taking all the precautionary measures to prevent this from happening in the country and it is only an assumption that COVID-19 cases could reach one million in 100 days, " Dr Herath stressed.

Sri Lanka currently records an average of 2,300 COVID-19 cases daily. The number of daily infections has surpassed 2,000 mark for the ninth consecutive day as of last evening. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
