COVID deaths could rise to 20,000 by September

Around 20,000 could lose their lives due to COVID virus in Sri Lanka by September this year, if the country fails to arrest the vast spread of the disease, former Minister Mangala Samaraweera quoted in a Washington-based university's research report today.

Mr. Samaraweera said in a statement that Sri Lanka should focus on this research report. The University of Washington had done an indepth study on the pandemic and had focused on entire globe. Therefore Sri Lanka should act fast and take steps to arrest the spread of the pandemic" he said.
 
"The report had taken US and UK as countries which had been able to control the disease successfully. Therefore Sri Lanka should take these countries as role models," he added.

Also he said Sri Lanka should see to it that 70% of its population should be vaccinated as soon as possible to avoid the  disaster. "It is not too late for Sri Lanka to avoid the disaster if it acts swiftly," he quoting in the University of Washington report. (Yohan Perera)
