A pair of male and female Capybaras have been flown to Sri Lanka under the animal exchange scheme between the Czech Republic and Sri Lanka and handed over to the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens.
A senior official of the zoo said that Capyparas belonged to a rare species of animal living in the South Asian countries but not endemic to Sri Lanka and that a well-grown animal was about four feet tall. He said Capybaras are herbivorous animals with a life span of about six years.
The official said the quarantine period of the two animals introduced to the zoo was over and that they were ready for public exposition. (H.M.Dharmapala)
