Two young men were taken into custody for allegedly taking hostage a 16-month-old child and raping the mother. They were produced before Pugoda Magistrate Vishan Ekanayake and remanded till November 04.
The suspects, aged 21 years and 23 years were identified as residents of Devapura and Pepiliyawala areas.
Police told the court that another suspect wanted in connection with the incident had fled from the area and that he would be arrested soon.
The two suspects had been taken into custody following investigations into a complaint by a woman that they had raped her after threatening to kill her child when her husband was away from home. She had complained that they had threatened to dash her child on the floor.
A senior official of Pugoda police said the suspects were referred to the JMO Gampaha General Hospital, G.A. Seneviratne who examined them and reported that there were no indications of the woman being raped.
However she is under treatment at the Gampaha General Hospital awaiting a medical report.
Meanwhile, her husband's statement to the police said his wife had been under psychiatric treatment a few months ago.
