Chinese woman nabbed with gems worth Rs.1.1mn

A 30-year-old Chinese woman had been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), when she was trying to smuggle out uncut gems to Hong Kong last night, Airport Deputy Customs Director Parakrama Basnayake said.

He said the suspect was arrested at 10.50 p. m yesterday following a tip off to the Customs officers.

The gems were valued at Rs.1.1 million and the officers found them concealed in her baggage, with equipment that used to identify gems, Mr. Basnayake said.

“The suspect was a frequent traveller to Sri Lanka from Hong Kong via Malaysia.” he said.

The haul of gems was confiscated.

According to the Customs investigations, the suspect used to make jewellery items after polishing these gems in Hong Kong.
