Claiming that the LG gas cylinders currently in use at households were still posing the risk of exploding, National Peoples’ Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake today urged the Government to retrieve the LP gas cylinders currently in use as well.

He told Parliament that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has ordered to recall only unused LP gas cylinders. But steps should be taken to collect gas cylinders which are being used as well.

“People take gas cylinders home to use them. They don’t keep them at home with the seal intact. The gas cylinders that are being used by people at home are still at the risk of exploding or leaking. Steps should be taken to collect these half-used gas cylinders as well to ensure the safety of the people,” he said.

The MP proposed that a mechanism should be introduced to collect the insecure gas cylinders currently in use by charging an additional fee to the volume of gas that has been used.

“The amount of gas that has been used can be measured by weighing the weight of the gas cylinders currently in use. An additional fee can be charged for the volume of gas used and provided with a new one,” he said.

State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna acccepted the proposal and assured to look into it (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
