Compensation of Rs. 4.2 Mn awarded to family of slain Sub-Inspector

Colombo, Jan 03 - (Daily Mirror) -  In the aftermath of the tragic shooting incident in Weligama that claimed the life of Sub-Inspector Upul Chaminda on December 31, 2023, a compensation amounting to Rs. 4.2 million has been granted to his family.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe contributed a substantial sum of Rs. 2.5 million. In addition, the Sri Lanka Police contributed Rs. 1.7 million towards the compensation.

The ceremony for the disbursement of funds took place with Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles presenting Rs. 2.5 million on behalf of the President, while Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon handed over Rs. 1.7 million to the family.

The tragic incident unfolded during a police raid near a Weligama hotel, resulting in the death of SI Upul Chaminda and injuring another police officer.
