Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa today urged the government to conduct provincial council and the local government elections which are due early next year without any delay.
Speaking at a ceremony held in connection with the handing over of medical equipment to Pottuvil Hospital, Mr. Premadasa said these elections should be held in order to check the pulse of the people.
"Everyone including the government will be able to know where people of this country stand, if the provincial council elections are conducted immediately and the local government election due early next year,"Mr. Premadasa said.
He also urged the government to divert the funds allocated for the construction of jogging tracks by bringing in a resolution in Parliament. "Some in the government say it is not possible to divert the funds set aside for the construction of jogging tracks, as the funds have already been allocated for the project though the budget. However one must remember that it is possible to divert the funds by bringing in s resolution to that effect. These funds should be utilised to purchase the much-needed medical equipment for hospitals," he added.(Yohan Perera)
