Colombo, September 25 (Daily Mirror) - The availability of chicken and eggs in the country has reached the most sufficient levels and the country has become self-sufficient, All Island Poultry Association (AIPA) President Ajith Gunasekara said.

Addressing the media, he said that egg production has increased across all farms, and there are sufficient stocks available in the market.

He also noted that chicken production has been raised to meet the country’s needs.

However, despite the rise in egg production, local market prices dropping, the egg consumption in the country has significantly decreased, the association president said.

"Currently, small sized eggs are priced at Rs. 30, medium sized eggs at Rs.35, and large eggs at a maximum of Rs.40 in the local market. Retail prices range between Rs. 32 and Rs.40. The cost of producing eggs in large-scale farms is Rs. 32 each, while small and medium-scale farms incur costs between Rs. 33 and Rs. 34. As prices continue to fall, small and medium-scale producers are becoming unstable," he said.
