The officers attached to the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Division today thwarted an attempt to smuggle 16 kg of gold into the country, Customs Deputy Director (Legal) and media spokesman Sudatta Silva said.
He said two suspects were arrested over this smuggling.
The gold suspected to be smuggled into the country through courier companies through the cargo sector using fake trade names.
The gold in the form of spare parts and machine components were found packed in several packs and were declared to customs as vehicle motor spare parts and coffee making machine parts.
The customs officers found the components found inside the coffee machines were made of gold to mislead the customs officers.
The market value of the gold is approximately Rs. 220 million. (Chaturanga Samarawickama)
